Project 2: Terrestrial
In its Place
For this assignment I am looking at terrestrial as habitation of energy. I filmed in a cemetery after a snowstorm so that I would leave behind a trail, so it would be evident that the path I took disrupted the stillness of the fresh snow in the atmosphere of the cemetery. My goal was to go there and replace the new fallen snow with a rock. I brought with me rocks that had been hand tumbled and gifted to me from a friend. They are meant to cleanse negative energy, which I myself am not entirely convinced of, but the way I was using them was to represent earth. The people buried there are marked by stone, and by placing that stone there they are given importance, but placing my own stone there I want to add to the aura of the placement of objects in the earth and how they are attributed importance or contributing to aura. The sound for this piece is mainly a heavily edited drone made by layering various instruments and distorting. I recorded myself in a stream of consciousness moment talking about time on earth and how I will not last forever, but the spaces I exist in will. I sampled audio from two different lectures given by Allen Watts speaking about life, death, dreams and our place in the universe, and how everything is exactly where it is meant to be. The cemetery provided an iconographic motif that I played off of for the piece and helped determine the other shots and the way I filmed it. I wanted to use layering throughout the video to symbolize the passage of time and duality in existence, my own footsteps disturbing the fresh snow in front of me became a vital base for which the majority of the film is layered on.
